While serving in the Iraq War, J.R. Martinez thought his life at 19 was going to take off after he got home. He didn’t expect to come out disfigured after a horrible accident. He told Dr Phil about the day of his accident.

The Humvee Martinez was riding in drove over a roadside bomb. He was conscious when the flames engulfed him and the Humvee. He remembered being pulled out by his sergeant and him cradling his head. The sergeant rocked him back and forth, calling him “baby boy.” Martinez told him over and over “my face hurts” before blacking out.

He woke up in the hospital days later. He had burns covering 34 percent of his body and 24 percent of them where third degree burns. He had severe organ damage and he thought his life was over. Martinez recalled thinking how he would never get a girlfriend, get married or have a family. He said he thought he was a monster.

Martinez recalled going into a severe depression. He was angry and full of regret. He played the victim. He said at first no one would approach him. After he started getting recognition by notable celebrities for his sacrifice in the war, more people became interested in him and his story.

When he was in Iraq, Martinez said he was always forgetting military time. He bought an inexpensive watch to help him out and was wearing it the day of the accident. The funny thing is that the watch stopped his wrist from getting burned. He decided on his 25th birthday to get a broken watch tattooed over the unburnt skin. It’s a watch with the time of his accident. The watch band is made of Roman numerals of the date of the accident.
