Dr. Phil: What Happens When A Schizophrenic Grows Up?

Michael and Susan, the parents of a 10-year-old schizophrenic child, Jani, are not only experiencing marriage problems now because of how hard it is to parent two mentally handicapped children, but are especially fearful for what may happen to Jani when she grows up. Conveniently enough, a mother named Lisa had written in because her daughter, now 25, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder when she was a child. Now, however, she is not only a schizophrenic, but a schizophrenic heroin addict.

Ashley is not only homeless, but a schizophrenic heroin addict, as well.

Ashley is 25 and addicted to heroin. This is almost understandable, given that her hallucinations include anything from a severed body to dead people standing in an orchard. These come around once or twice a month, and are often brought on by being around her family. However, heroin is not only illegal, but highly addictive and dangerous as well. She doesn’t take her prescription medications because she doesn’t like how they make her feel and has instead settled with heroin as a tranquilizer for her ever-wandering mind.

This drug problem has created a very damaged, if loving, relationship between Lisa and Ashley. Lisa can’t just stand by and watch her daughter go insane, so she enables Ashley’s drug habit by either giving her money for heroin or even driving her to a drug dealer so that she can purchase the drugs. “I am loving her to death,” said Lisa.

Ashley had been watching the show, and said that she noticed a lot of striking similarities between herself and Jani at a young age. She even noted a hallucination that she had last night in the hotel she is staying at, where a being emerged from her bathroom and crawled up her wall.

Her situation outside of this show is dire, however. She has no home, struggles to get money to pay for her drug habit, and puts herself in very dangerous situations to get the money she needs to pay for her heroin habit of about 1 gram per day. In fact, she came to the show with a black eye.
