Dr. Phil: Ray Rice Scandal
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard about the Ray Rice abuse scandal, which has been going on for months. It started with a video released in February of football player Ray Rice pulling his unconscious then-fiance Janay Rice out of an elevator after apparently hitting her. Criminal charges were raised against Rice, but later dropped. Then the NFL suspended him for two games, a sentence many thought was far too light.
Then there was the second video showing Ray Rice punching his fiance in the face, which caused Ray Rice to be banned from the NFL and dropped from his contract with the Baltimore Ravens. He also lost a number of his endorsement deals. He later married his fiance.
Everyone has been talking about discussing this scandal for some time, but now, Dr. Phil weighs in.
Dr. Phil: Violence Against Women In The NFL
Dr. Phil said that there are no sidelines, only sides when it came to domestic violence. He said the NFL needs to be stricter against its players who abuse women. He said the NFL has been “put profits and on-field performance ahead of human dignity.” Millions of people are watching how this thing is unfolding, including children.
“Every player, coach, and owner has a chance to make a bold statement that says, ‘We have a moral compass and violence against women is a deal breaker and will not be tolerated,'” he said.
Two other NFL players have domestic violence issues hanging over their heads, Ray McDonald of the San Francisco 49ers and Greg Hardy of the Carolina Panthers. McDonald faces charges after his pregnant fiance showed police bruises on her necks and arms from alleged abuse. He’s still allowed to play by his team and the league, despite being investigated. Meanwhile Hardy is alleged to have dragged his girlfriend by her hair, thrown her on a futon, choked her and threatened to kill her. Hardy was found guilty of assaulting his girlfriend, but he appealed and is currently on leave with pay from his team while he gets ready for a new trial.
Dr. Phil: Domestic Violence Against Women In America
This isn’t just an NFL problem. In the next minute, 24 people will be harmed by a partner, adding up to 1440 an hour, 34,560 a day, and 12 million a year. Three women are killed daily in America from domestic violence incidents.
The NFL is a $250 billion industry that impacts America. Dr. Phil said they should be role models and help to educate. “Allowing this element inside the game cheapens the league and it reflects negatively on the vast majority of fine men that play in the NFL,” he said.
Dr. Phil Is Against Domestic Violence
Dr. Phil said when he started his show, he knew he wanted to put a spotlight on many important issues in America, including domestic violence. He’s created a campaign called End the Silence on Domestic Violence. During his time on the air, Dr. Phil’s show has provided millions of dollars in resources and done hundreds of hours of programming on domestic violence.
Dr. Phil showed a montage of past episodes, highlighting several past episodes. The images and phrases were shocking and violent, including a woman who was attacked with a machete, a woman who was punched in the face so hard she lost one of her eyes, and a woman whose ear was bitten clear off. It was a very horrifying montage.
