Just how tough is making a marriage work with developmentally disabled children?

After meeting Jani, a schizophrenic 10-year-old belonging to Susan and Michael, he understands just how much of a handful she can be, which is a good thing, because he then needed to help the two out with their marriage, which was suffering. Making a marriage work with mentally handicapped children has got to be tough.

Susan and Michael’s lives constantly revolve around the children. Among other communicative problems that this is causing, they never sleep together anymore, either. It has gotten so bad that Michael nearly committed an infidelity, when he met another woman that made him forget the reality of his challenging life. However, he only ever kissed the woman, and admitted his mistake to Susan soon after, begging forgiveness.

What hurt Susan the most was the betrayal she felt. You are supposed to be able to trust your husband. She said that she forgave Michael, but she hasn’t forgotten.

Michael and Susan both admit to hating each other on occasion, but since they are parenting the same two children and going through the same things, they are able to empathize with each other where others may not understand, but it is still difficult making a marriage work with mentally handicapped children.

Dr. Phil was quick to point out how talkative the couple was, noting that they were often talking over one another without even realizing it. Somehow, it was a revelation to Michael hearing this, never even noticing his wife interjecting directly into the middle of his stories, perhaps due to the exhaustion he much always be feeling from his parenting.

Dr Phil: Advice For Parents Of Mentally Handicapped Kids

On a very serious note, Dr. Phil suggested that the parents find time for themselves so that they do not burn themselves out and become emotionally bankrupt. He left them with a spec of hope, however, by telling them that there were great strides being made to understand what causes schizophrenia, and there may be a way to cure or at least treat it more effectively coming in the near future.
