Dr Phil: Dealing With Grief
Tiffany and Richard have been living in a nightmare since they got married. They lost two babies in their first year of marriage, one miscarriage and one stillborn. Then they had two healthy babies. A year ago, Tiffany gave birth to Mikey, their third baby.
Mikey had a heart condition and stopped breathing one night. Tiffany blamed herself for Mikey’s death. Then, the family found out that Richie’s father violated their daughter. The loss and abuse triggered so much grief that they forgot how to communicate.
Dr Phil: Mikey’s Memory
Tiffany said that because of the tragedy she’s going through she doesn’t have patience with her kids. She finds herself yelling at them when they are just being kids. She blames herself for the grief and doesn’t understand how her husband grieves. She feels that she will never be happy again.
Dr Phil said she should give herself permission to have joy. She isn’t honoring Mikey’s memory by being sad and shut in all the time. He reminded her that Mikey is watching over their family. He deserves to be remembered with smiles and laughter, not tears and sadness.
Dr Phil: Communicating Your Grief
Richie said that he doesn’t blame his wife for her standards or behavior. He said that she did everything she could and is a great mom. Dr Phil had him tell her what he wants in the marriage. He said he fell in love with his wife and will do anything it takes to make their marriage work.
Tiffany told her husband that she doesn’t want to quit on their marriage. She wants to work with him to make their relationship and life better every day.
