Dr Phil: Parent’s Worst Nightmare
Brenda and Jeremy are going through every parent’s worst nightmare. Their two boys were taken from them when Brenda’s mother committed suicide and killed the boys. Jeremy has been supporting and consoling his wife while Brenda tries to figure out how to live.
Alton, 2, and Ashton, 6 months, were remembered as polite, gentle and joyful children. Dr Phil played a lovely tribute for the boys, who were killed on February 26 2013. Brenda’s mother, Debra, had mental health issues and multiple personalities.
The boys’ ashes are now resting in their home. They have pictures of them all over the house. Brenda said she finds comfort knowing they are together. She hopes and plans to have more children one day, but Dr Phil wants their family to heal first.
Dr Phil: Grieving Process & Losing a Child
Brenda said she was born to be a mom. She asked Dr Phil how she is supposed to go on now that she feels so empty and without purpose. She worries that Jeremy will blame her because it was her mother. Jeremy told Dr Phil that his faith has helped him get through the crisis. They had never been a religious family, but God grabbed their hearts during the situation.
Dr Phil told her and Jeremy that it’s normal to grieve at different paces. One of them may want to go outside while the other feels like being in bed all day. The important thing is to not judge each other based on where they are in the moment. It’s important to love and support each other everyday.
He said their marriage is at risk because of losing a child. Statistically, marriages crumble after having a child pass away. If they are willing to acknowledge that, they have a better chance of working through it.
