Sizemore said that his happy childhood was shattered by his parents’ divorce. He pursued a dream of acting to channel anger and pursue a Hollywood lifestyle, with his debut in Born On The 4th Of July.
He said that he was seduced by the glamour and entitlement of stardom. He said he got a lot of freebies as a Hollywood star, and did not adjust well to the transition. Alcohol helped him manage his nerves.

“The further I got cut off from normal human daily life, the more isolated I felt,” he said. Drugs became his friends and gave him feelings of confidence and security.
Very soon, he became addicted to drugs, which he used to reward himself and cope with the unresolved emotions he was struggling with. By the time he wanted out of his drug addiction, he felt that he was beaten down by “the shame and disappointment” of his situation.
Dr Phil: By Some Miracle I Made It Out Of There
Now, Tom is telling his story in the book By Some Miracle I Made It Out Of There. He talked to Dr Phil about how his life spiraled out of control.
He explained that he realized he was in trouble when he was filming a movie in Vancouver. He did not travel with his drug supply, and when he could not get through the day at work without leaning on drugs, he knew he was on a bad road.
“I went to my first AA meeting in ‘91, and I didn’t get sober until 2009,” he said.
Tom Sizemore said that he never particularly liked LA, but the town was receptive to him, and he felt entitled by his new status as a star. He got free meals and had assistants to take care of his every need.
A combination of low self-esteem, success, and drug addiction created a bomb that cratered his life over a long period of time.
