Dr Oz Metabolism Boost: 7 Day Plan
It’s never a bad time to take control of your personal health, and that may be one reason why Dr Oz so often features diet plans and fitness programs on his show. The wide range of options means that there is truly something out there for everyone, but it all comes down to the same goal: most of us want to be healthier. The Dr Oz Metabolism Boost shared a seven-day plan to fire up your metabolism. He said that by following these steps, you can avoid the common pitfalls of dieting and see results in just one week. Find out how your metabolic rate, eating every three hours, and even drinking iced beverages can spark your metabolism once and for all.
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 1: Metabolic Rate
Before you get started on this Dr Oz Metabolism Boost plan, you need to learn your own Metabolic Rate. Dr Oz recruited an audience volunteer and calculated her Metabolic Rate based on personal factors: age, height, weight, and activity level. This information helps to determine how many calories a person can consume before they will gain weight. Once you have a baseline for yourself, you can adjust your daily caloric intake to target your fitness goals, such as weight loss.
Dr Oz’s volunteer, Lisa, got her results and learned that she can eat 2255 calories in a day before she will start to gain weight. You can find a metabolism calculator on Dr Oz’s website or on a medical website. You can also ask your doctor about this at your next appointment.
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 2: Cut 100 Calories
When starting a new diet, many of us throw ourselves into it at full speed, hoping to start strong and immediately get results. But the problem with this is that making huge cuts to our typical food intake can cause the body to panic and actually slow down the metabolism, having the opposite of your desired effect. To work around that, Dr Oz suggested a simple solution: “diet smart, not hard.” Instead of going full throttle, start by cutting 100 calories per day out of your diet.
This also means that you can still enjoy your favorite menu items and even desserts. Just be mindful of portions and help yourself to a little less than you’d typically eat. In fact, Dr Oz even admitted there’s a health benefit to ice cream: it contains calcium, which sparks fat cells to break down excess fat. (He stopped short of advocating for an Ice Cream Diet, but we can keep dreaming.)
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 3: Add Protein & Omega 3s
Did you know that simply changing what you eat will change your metabolism? One of the nutrition secrets for better metabolism is adding more Protein to your diet. That’s because the metabolism works harder and burns more calories when it’s breaking down Protein, as compared to carbohydrates.
Fish is a great protein, because it’s loaded with Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Salmon is a great option; you can also check out Dr Oz’s recent Sea Bass Recipe. Omega 3s help increase your body’s natural fat burning enzymes, and Dr Oz said you should have fish at least twice per week.
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 4: Eat Every Three Hours
The next audience member said that she has bad eating habits, typically skipping breakfast and waiting until lunchtime to eat. Dr Oz had a radical change in store for her.
Again, this advice might seem counterintuitive, but to get your metabolism going, you need to fuel it constantly. Dr Oz said that means eating every three hours, instead of just three big meals a day. Though you might think dieting means eating fewer meals, Dr Oz stressed the importance of eating regularly throughout the day. Here’s his sample meal schedule:
- 6 – 8 a.m. – Breakfast
- 10 – 11 a.m. – Snack
- 12 – 2 p.m. – Lunch
- 3 – 5 p.m. – Snack
- 5 – 7 p.m. – Dinner
Of course, you can adjust those times to fit your schedule. But for metabolic purposes, Dr Oz did not recommend eating later than 7 p.m. (depending on your bedtime; see Dr Oz’s Diet Myths for more information).
You don’t want to ever go hungry on this diet, and Dr Oz even noted that skipping snacks would hurt your diet goals. He suggested choosing snacks such as Pistachios and/or Dried Apricots to sneak more protein and fat burning monounsaturated fatty acids into your diet. Also, eating 250 calorie snacks during the day has been proven to make people eat less during mealtimes, leading to incremental weight loss.
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 5: Drink Three Iced Drinks Every Day
Dr Oz’s next audience volunteer said she wanted to set a good example for her daughters when it comes to food. He said it’s good that she’s thinking about that, because her children will follow in her footsteps.
Having an iced beverage actually boosts your metabolism, because the body has to warm up the beverage to digest it in your stomach, which burns off energy. This is a passive way to lose one pound per year, just by drinking iced tea or iced coffee (yum!).
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 6: Zinc Supplement Benefits
Another woman said she wanted to be around for her children for years to come. For her and all of us who want to fire up the metabolism, Dr Oz recommended Zinc.
Dr Oz mentioned that Zinc is rich in the hormone Leptin, which signals the body that you are full. He suggested adding 12 mg per day of Zinc or a multivitamin containing Zinc.
Dr Oz Metabolism Day 7: Exercise Bursts
Dr Oz had one more tip to round out his seven day plan for boosting metabolism. He met a woman who exercises by ballroom dancing and walking. Dr Oz even took a spin around the set with her as the audience cheered. But what does this have to do with Metabolism?
Exercising in short bursts is another way to stimulate your metabolism by engaging the muscles. These pops of exercise cause muscles to wake up suddenly, burning more calories more quickly. Dr Oz even said that even dancing counts, and it burns more calories than walking. You can even stand up and sit down repeatedly, maybe during commercial breaks of your favorite TV show.
