There’s an old saying that you should never trust a skinny chef. But maybe the reason that some of today’s best known chefs are so slender is because they know more about food and its effects on the body than most of us. After they judged viewers’ Calorie Cutting Recipes, celebrity chefs Ming Tsai, Gail Simmons and John Besh shared some secrets they rely on to stay slim in the kitchen, including Sambal Oelek Paste, Wakame Seaweed Salad, and more. They recommended healthy recipes for Popcorn and Skinny Barbecue Sauce or Salad Dressing too.

Dr Oz: Sambal Oelek Paste Review

From Top Chef, Ming Tsai said that spicy Sambal Oelek Paste is a great way to jumpstart your metabolism. The paste makes a good dipping sauce for vegetables or meat, and you can even use it in your stir fry or mix it with Dijon Mustard in recipes. Not only will it help you slim down, it also brings out the food’s natural flavors.

Dr Oz: Wakame Seaweed Salad

Wakame Seaweed Salad is a fat burner that’s full of protein and Brown Seaweed. It’s naturally low in fat, and Ming suggested giving it a try.

Dr Oz: Gail Simmons Popcorn Recipe

If you want to make your favorite snack a little healthier, skip the salt and butter. Top Chef’s Gail Simmons shared her own simple popcorn solution.



  • 2 tablespoons Canola Oil
  • 1/2 cup Popcorn Kernels
  • 2 tablespoons Walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup dried Banana Chips
  • Salt


  1. Pop kernels in Canola Oil on your stovetop.
  2. When the popcorn is finished, remove it from the pan.
  3. Then mix in your Walnuts and Bananas, adding just a pinch of salt.

Dr Oz: Spiral Veggie Slicer Review

Gail’s favorite kitchen gadget is a Spiral Vegetable Slicer, and she thinks it could help more people lose weight. It’s great for Eggplant, Cucumbers, or other favorite salad ingredients. It turns almost any vegetable into spiral strips instantly, and it’s very easy to use.

Dr Oz: Skinny Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Chef John Besh shared his favorite Skinny Barbecue Recipe, if you’re trying to find the perfect balance of salty and sweet, without too many added fats or calories.

Just mix equal parts of Agave Nectar and Rice Wine Vinegar for the perfect complement to your favorite meats or chicken dishes.

Dr Oz: Skinny Salad Dressing Recipe

Chef John Besh shared one more skinny secret: his Skinny Salad Dressing Recipe, which is perfect for almost any dish. Swapping out your salad dressing could actually cut more than half the calories out of your homemade salad. He suggested mixing Hazelnut Oil and Avocado Oil.

Another great tip he mentioned is getting your dressing on the side, and dipping the veggies in the dressing so you use less of it. (You can also dip the fork in the dressing between each bite.) If you want a little more zest in your salad, squeeze a fresh Lemon or Lime into the mix.
