Dr Oz: Bone Broth Energy Drink Replacement

Dr Oz said to put down your coffee, throw out the energy drinks, and get rid of the soda because now there’s a new way to combat fatigue: bone broth. Dr Oz said it’s the trend that every exhausted woman should be trying. New York City restaurant Brodo serves up the alternative to your morning coffee. Those who drink it say that it really works and is delicious as well.

Dr Oz shared that bone broth can help give you steady energy throughout the day, is a good source of hydration, is an easy-to-digest protein, and helps you sleep at night. There’s even been studies that have shown that chicken broth boosts immune function. Registered dietitian Esther Blum recommends 1-2 cups a day, and suggests replacing your morning coffee with it to energize you. in the afternoon when you hit the slump, you can enjoy another cup.

Esther makes her own bone broth using a sevenquart crock pot, and you can find the recipe for the broth below. If you want a real smokey flavor, Esther said you can try roasting the bones ahead of time. When you’re done with the bones, you can save them because they will be reused again.

She shared that nine pounds of bones actually costs just about $9 so if you use the bones twice, you’re looking at just $0.50 a cup to make it at home. To save the bones, let them cool and store them in a bag in the freezer. The broth keeps fresh in the refrigerator for five days, but if you want it to last longer you can store it in mason jars or in ice cube trays.

You can pop out one of the broth ice cubes when you’re heating up rice or vegetables to get the nutrition every day.

Dr Oz: Cultural Bone Broth

Dr Oz shared that he drank the broth as a child growing up in Turkey and it’s actually common in many cultures. Other versions of the broth include Jewish penicillin, Mexican bone broth, and French bone broth. Esther said they’re blank templates that you can add herbs or vegetables to, to make it to your liking.

One audience member named Jewel tried the bone broth and shared that it worked as a substitute for her coffee. She said she didn’t get a headache from not having her coffee either.

Dr Oz: Bone Broth Recipe Ingredients

  • 3 lbs bones (cow or chicken)
  • 1/4 C apple cider vinegar
  • 2-3 carrots
  • 2-3 stalks of celery
  • 1 onion, halved
  • 1 tbsp sea salt
  • 16 C of water

Dr Oz: Bone Broth Recipe Directions

  1. Add bones & vinegar to crock pot & let sit for 30 minutes, stirring & rotating occasionally.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients & put on low to avoid boiling.
  3. Cook overnight, at least 19 hours.
  4. Strain if you want just the broth, or leave the vegetables in.
