Dr. Oz invited life coach, motivational speaker and host of Iynala: Fix My Life, Iyanla Vanzant, on the show to talk about healing emotional pain and the personal struggles that taught her how to deal with pain throughout her life.

Dr Oz: Iyanla Vanzant Loses Daughter & 3 Causes of Emotional Pain

Dr. Oz and Iyanla Vanzant went over the three causes of emotional pain, and Vanzant explained how she let herself go crazy after the death of her daughter.

Vanzant told Dr. Oz she never lies about her past and she talks openly about her mistakes. She believes it is important to feel validated with your own feelings so you can heal pain without allowing it to affect your physical health. She wants to empower people so they can make better choices to get through their pain rather than allow the pain to lead them in an unhealthy direction.

Dr Oz: Three Causes For Emotional Pain

Dr. Oz knows how to help people with physical pain but he wanted Vanzant’s advice for helping someone discover the root cause of their emotional pain. Vanzant told Dr. Oz there are three common causes of emotional pain, all of which typically lead a person to bottle up their feelings which can lead to health problems like weight gain. The three causes of emotional pain are listed below:

  1. The fear of not being loved or losing love.
  2. The fear of not being seen, heard and/or valued.
  3. The fear of speaking our authentic voice.

Dr Oz: Iyanla Vanzant – Allow True Feelings To Come Out

Iyanla Vanzant said the only way to get through emotional pain is to “feel, deal and heal.” Many people are shut off to their feelings, but they need to be more aware of their emotions when they feel guilt or anger or shame or any other feeling. Vanzant said it is important to feel your emotions in the moment and deal with them as soon as they arise. This will allow your true feelings to come forward and give you the chance to heal the thoughts that keep the pain present in your mind.

Dr. Oz thought Vanzant’s approach to helping people was a bit aggressive but she said it is necessary when it comes to working through emotional problems. She elaborated on her approach saying much of the pain we feel is in our thoughts, meaning a direct approach is required to penetrate the person’s mind and give them a deeper experience.

Dr Oz: Iyanla Vanzant Gives Herself Permission To Go Crazy

Iyanla Vanzant told Dr. Oz she literally lost her mind for six months after she lost her daughter to a rare form of colon cancer. Vanzant said she stayed in bed for six straight months after she buried her daughter. Someone took care of her the entire time. They did her laundry, they keep the house clean and they made her food. Vanzant said she did this because she believes it is healthy to be able to ask for help when you need it. She gave herself permission to be crazy . She said women often believe they need to take care of everyone but themselves which is not true. It was not until she got a call to be the host of Starting Over that she finally got out of bed. She wanted to host the show in the name of her daughter.
