Dr Oz: Andrew Weil

There’s something new to learn each day from The Dr Oz Show, and Dr Oz is never shy about keeping an open mind when it comes to health. His guest, holistic expert Dr Andrew Weil, shared all natural solutions to common problems, including Red Yeast Rice Extract, Vitamin A, Psyllium Husk Fiber, and even Chinese Moss. He also shared his Life Balance Breathing technique from the book Spontaneous Happiness.

Dr Oz: Chinese Moss (Huperzine A)

Dr Oz: Psyllium Husk Fiber & Chinese Moss

Dr Oz's guest, holistic expert Dr Andrew Weil, recommended alternative treatments like Psyllium Husk Fiber & Chinese Moss.

Your brain is a critical organ when it comes to staying in great health. It keeps you alive and keeps the body working properly. Dr Andrew Weil talked about Huperzine A, a derivative of Chinese moss, that is concentrated into a compound that can be used to offset early Alzheimer’s Disease.

The recommended dosage is 300 mcg per day, though Dr Oz and Dr Weil agreed that you should run this one by your doctor before adding it to your regimen.

Dr Oz: Phosphatidylserine

Another memory boosting natural product is Phosphatidylserine. Try 200 mg daily for improved memory retention.

Dr Oz: Red Yeast Rice Extract

Are you worried about your heart? Think about taking Red Yeast Rice Extract as a natural means of controlling your HDL Cholesterol. This natural product has a mix of statins without some of the side effects found in prescription medications. The dosage on this is 600 mg, twice daily.

Dr Oz: Niacin

Niacin is another heart product, and it’s even recommended by the American Heart Association. You can dose up with 500 mg, and the extended release formula is good for bedtime because it’ll work while you sleep. It brings up your good Cholesterol numbers.

This is another product you should discuss with your doctor; you might even teach him something if you ask him to research it.

Psyllium Husk Fiber

Dr Weil also looked at digestion, and if you need help relieving gas or related digestive pain, you can try adding Psyllium Husk Fiber to your diet. Make sure you drink lots of water with every dose.

Dr Oz noted that it’ll take about a month to build up to the 40 grams of Fiber you need daily. Though food is the best natural way to get your dietary Fiber needs, you can take a 40 mg supplement if you need to bridge the gap.

Vitamin A & Immunity: Dr Oz

When it comes to immunity, there’s one product that holistic expert Andrew Weil warned against: Retinol. He said that it just builds up in the body, which could be an issue later on. Instead, he suggested mixing the following Carotenoids daily:

  • Vitamin C, 200 mg
  • Vitamin E, 400 IU
  • Selenium, 200 mcg
  • COQ10, 120 mg (gel form, with food)

Most multivitamins will contain the first three of these ingredients, so check the label first before you go shopping for additional products.

Dr Andrew Weil: Spontaneous Happiness Review

Dr Andrew Weil is a noted expert at the nexus of traditional and alternative medicine. His latest book is Spontaneous Happiness, and its goal is to help readers find balance in their lives.

One way you can feel better about your life is by keeping a Gratitude Journal. Keep notes through the day of things you are thankful for, and write them down in your journal before bedtime. Just one month of this practice has been proven to lift people’s spirits.

Dr Andrew Weil: Life Balance Breathing

Dr Weil’s Life Balance Breathing relies on the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique. Here is how it works:

  1. Breath in through your nose as you count to 4.
  2. Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
  3. Exhale for 8 seconds.

Repeat this for four complete cycles, twice daily. In less than 20 seconds, this trick can help you lower your Blood Pressure and Heart Rate.
