Dr. Oz explains what food should be eaten to prevent silent reflux, as well as the foods you should not eat. Also, Dr. Koufman’s cook book ‘Dropping Acid’

Dr. Koufman said to imagine your stomach as being filled with seawater and lobsters. The lobsters represent an enzyme called pepsin, a cancer causing enzyme. When a person lays down or because of acid reflux, the lobsters (pepsin) will head towards the mouth, up through the esophagus. When the lobsters (pepsin) get into the esophagus they will hold on to the sides of the esophagus. The same thing can happen when acidic foods are eaten. The lobsters (pepsin) like have the acidic foods splashed on them as the food heads through the intestines.

Dr. Oz: Preventing Silent Reflux

Dr. Oz said there are three steps to preventing silent reflux, which can be turned around in a little over a year. So do not fear if you have silent reflux, it is curable and preventable.

Silent Reflux Diet: Acidic Vs Non-Acidic Foods

Get rid of acid in the diet and avoid deep fried food like fries and fried chicken. Chocolate, mint, tomatoes and onions are also bad. But these foods can be replaced with bananas, cantaloupes  anything green, almond milk, oats and oatmeal. It is recommended to do this for 2 to 4 weeks. Studies show the reflux symptom index can go from ten to five or less in just 14 days of getting rid of bad food.

Dr Oz: 4 C’s – Caffeine, Citrus, Carbonated Beverages & Canned Foods

The four C’s. No more caffeinated beverages, citrus beverages, carbonated beverages, including seltzer water or any short of cocktails. Seltzer water is especially bad because acid in the stomach can get trapped in the bubble and explode in the esophagus.

No more canned foods. Canned foods need to go in the trash. Many canned foods, according to Dr. Koufman, are highly acidic, which helps them to kill bacteria and have a long shelf life. Everything in a bottle or can, may have a lot of acid.

About the author

After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Journalism and Anthropology, I managed a pizza place for a year, while freelancing for various newspapers in the area. Working every weekend in sauna like conditions, never being able to take a day off and being covered in flour is something I will not miss. I hope Recapo has air conditioning.
