Dr Oz: Resistant Carbohydrates Prevent Cancer
Dr. Oz has always warned his audience against eating the wrong types of carbohydrates because they are bad for your health, but Dr. Oz may be singing another tune after he talks with Dr. Robynne Chutkan.
Dr. Chutkan stopped by Dr. Oz to talk about carbohydrates, which she admits are mostly unhealthy but revealed there are resistant carbs that help your body fight cancer. She said some people have been calling these resistant carbohydrates the miracle cure-all because of their powerful benefits that not only help prevent diabetes and cancer, but also help you lose weight.
Dr Oz: Resistant Carbs Help Rid Body Of Toxins
Dr. Oz used a larger-than-life model of the small and large intestines to demonstrate how regular, or simple, carbs get processed in the body as opposed to the resistant carbs. He showed how most carbs are turned into sugar and absorbed by the body causing fat production and weight gain. But when you eat resistant carbs, they make their way down to your colon where they can help your body get rid of toxins and they provide good bacteria with the nutrients they need to thrive.
Dr Oz: Three Ways Resistant Carbs Prevent Colon Cancer
Dr. Robynne Chutkan said there are three ways resistant carbs help prevent colon cancer and improve the health of your bowels. She also revealed that increasing the amount of resistant starches in your diet can reduce your risk for colon cancer by 50 percent.
- Resistant carbs bulk up the stool and create a large bowel movement, which helps to sweep all of the toxins out of the colon.
- They encourage the growth of good bacteria to improve the health of your digestive tract.
- They produce a compound called short-chain fatty acid, which is the energy source of the cells in the colon.
Dr. Chutkan said recent research has shown resistant starches to slow down the growth of estrogen receptor positive tumors, such as the ones found in breast cancer. She said this is exciting data that could change how we look at cancer.
Dr Oz: Resistant Carbs Prevent Diabetes
Dr. Oz said he finds the research very promising for the one in three Americans affected by diabetes. Dr. Chutkan explained you do not get the same sugar and insulin spike with resistant carbs as you do when you eat simple carbs, which is why they are so beneficial at fighting diabetes.
