Dr Oz: Gluten Free, But Don’t Want To Be?
Many people say gluten is the number one cause of their gas, bloating, and stomach pain, but even if giving it up makes you feel better, sometimes you still miss it. Dr Oz introduced a doctor who says you don’t need to be gluten free forever, Dr Susan Blum.
Dr Blum explained that gluten is a protein commonly found in wheat and can cause irritable bowel-type symptoms. Gluten can also cause rashes, brain fog, and inflammation, so it’s important to test yourself to see if you gluten could be to blame. Her idea was to remove gluten for a period of time while you work on healing your gut, and then go back and reintroduce gluten. She said not everyone can do it. The 1% of the population with celiac or autoimmune disease can’t reintroduce gluten. This is more for people with gluten sensitivity, as long as they do it the right way.
Dr Oz: Oregano For Digestive Issues
Dr Blum then explained that this program works for anyone with any time of digestive issue as systemic inflammation like arthritis. The first step of the plan is to use something like oregano to cleanse your gut. For two weeks, you have to treat the overgrowth of bacteria in the gut, which is what’s causing the digestive problems. You can use the herb in food or make oregano tea, but she suggested taking 200 mg of oregano three times a day.
Dr Oz: Apple Cider Vinegar Stimulates Digestion
The next tip was to use apple cider vinegar, which stimulates digestion. She said it will prime you for eating gluten when you’re ready to again. She suggested either drinking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before a meal, or adding it to a glass of water. Dr Oz said he would rather just take a shot of it and get it out of the way.
Dr Oz: Probiotics For Your Gut
Dr Blum then said that probiotics are incredibly important and you can get them through what you eat. She suggested eating two servings of fermented or cultured foods per day to get the probiotics you need. You can snack on pickles or yogurt to enjoy the probiotics.
Dr Oz: Repair Gut Lining With L-Glutamine
You then have to start repairing the gut lining using L-glutamine. You can find the powder many places, including online or in health food stores. L-glutamine is a powerful amino acid that heals the cells that line your intestinal track. She suggested taking one teaspoon of L-glutamine powder once per day in a liquid or smoothie.
She said it has no taste, so it’s easy to mix in and get in your diet. She said it’s incredibly important to heal your gut lining.
Dr Oz: Try To Reintroduce Gluten
Dr Blum then explained that you need to be on a gluten-free diet for at least six months before you even begin to contemplate reintroducing gluten. She said after that, you can consider reintroducing it. But first you have to heal your gut, which is a three-month process. Depending on what your symptoms are, you may need longer than three months, and some of Dr Blum’s patients need up to a year.
When it comes time to test yourself to see if you can tolerate it, she suggested trying a grain like farro, spelt, or rye because those have less gluten than wheat does. You can try a half cup of those at a time, and if you seem to tolerate those okay, then move on to try whole wheat or whole grain, staying away from the white processed stuff.
The key is consuming it in moderation, a half cup of pasta at one time or one slice of bread, and then wait a couple days to see if you have a reaction. If you do, slow down and go back to the gut healing process.
