Dr Oz: Fantastic Four

Maybe it’s not surprising that one of the questions Dr Oz is most often asked is what doctors he and his family see. Dr Oz invited four specialists to appear on his show in answer to that question, with solutions that can prevent or reverse certain types of disease. Dr Oz assembled his team of Fantastic Four doctors to reveal the differences between Traditional Vs Functional medicine, define the word Diabesity, and share their remedies for fighting fatigue and reversing Alzheimer’s Disease.

The Dr Oz Fantastic Four are:

  • Dr Susan Blum

The team shared their advice to help people manage their weight, stop relying on prescriptions, and get ahead of medical conditions before they get out of control.

Dr Oz: Traditional Vs Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine & Super Salad: Dr Oz

Dr Oz's episode on Functional Medicine included a Fatigue Fighter Super Salad Recipe.

You are probably familiar with traditional medicine, which looks at your disease and symptoms to treat any immediate concerns. But Functional Medicine looks at the whole picture, including your entire body and the environment where you exist.

Functional Medicine is believed to be a powerful tool in treating chronic conditions such as Diabetes. This fresh approach takes the either/or out of the equation. With traditional medicine, you are generally either healthy or sick. But with Functional Medicine, the idea is to keep yourself healthy and avoid unwanted health problems by identifying root causes before they can develop into health issues.

Dr Oz: What Is Diabesity?

It’s probably not a huge surprise to Dr Oz viewers that food is a key component of your health picture. When it comes to the common chronic disease of Diabetes, most traditional medicine practitioners separate Diabetes and Obesity as individual conditions. But Function Medicine believes they are so intertwined that they have earned the nickname Diabesity.

Diabesity: NMR Cholesterol Test

If you saw Dr Oz’s Obesity Debate, you know that some people are truly OK with being overweight. But for those who are concerned about their health risks, there are ways you can treat the condition of Diabesity.

Two important tests can give you information about your health. They are the Insulin Response Test and the NMR Cholesterol Test.

A component called Endothelium is what regulates Cholesterol, keeping it in the bloodstream and out of the body’s cells to prevent damage. Particles of Cholesterol can tear tiny holes in arterial lining, creating dreaded plaque buildup.

Are you at risk for Diabesity? Here are some common foods associated with your risk:

  • Corn Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Flour
  • Gluten
  • Soy
  • Sugar

PGX Daily Review: Super Fiber

If you are concerned about your risk for Diabetes or Obesity (or the clever portmanteau Diabesity), you have options for prevention. Look for a super fiber product called PGX Daily. This will absorb more fat and sugar in your body, helping to prevent accumulation of extra body fat and lower your insulin levels. Dr Oz said even his wife has tried this product.

Dr Oz: T3 & Thyroid Gland

Dr Susan Blum talked about the common complaint of exhaustion. She puts her patients through a rigorous checklist to get to the bottom of what could be causing chronic fatigue. While traditional medicine looks for a disease related cause, Dr Blum is once again looking at the big picture.

She likes to check the Thyroid Gland and T3 levels of gas in your cells, which are responsible for burning calories. Low levels or T3 problems can be caused by various factors, such as stress, toxins in your body, or nutritional issues.

Dr Oz said if you feel a bump on your Thyroid Gland, it may be enlarged, which could cause health problems.

Dr Oz: Fatigue Fighters

Dr Oz discussed some remedies to fight fatigue and promote better Thyroid function. Here again, nutrition is a key component. Here are the recommendations from this segment.

  • 15 mg Zinc
  • 150 mcg Iodine
  • 200 mcg Selenium

Alzheimer’s Disease: Inflammation

Dr David Perlmutter talked with Dr Oz about the possibility of reversing Alzheimer’s Disease. He referred to it as an inflammation, and Dr Oz showed some brain scans to illustrate this. But managing your diet is another way you can tackle the issue of inflammation.

Dr Perlmutter reminded everyone that not all fats are bad for you. The brain is made up of 70% fat, which is needed to promote healthy brain function. But you do want to limit consumption of bad fats.

Instead, focus on good fats, such as Avocado and Coconut Oil.

Dr Oz: Alzheimer’s Disease Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment

Further, Dr Perlmutter believes that Alzheimer’s Disease can be treated using a Hyperbaric Oxygen process. This delivers high dose oxygen right to your brain. But results could take dozens of treatments, and if insurance isn’t picking up the tab, it can become expensive, at about $250 per visit.
