Dr Oz: Supplements For Heart Health + CoQ10 & Fish Oil

Dr Oz: Supplements For Heart Health

Dr Oz explained that there are three supplements you can take for better heart health and to help him share and explain the supplements, he welcomed Walmart pharmacist Zach Frye. Zach explained that supplements, along with a healthy lifestyle, can help you maintain good cholesterol and blood pressure levels. He said supplements are not regulated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, prevent, or cure disease, but are simply meant to help people have a healthier heart.

Dr Oz: CoQ10 Lowers Blood Pressure

The first supplement they wanted to talk about was CoQ10, which is an antioxidant made by the body and found in many foods. It’s produced within our cells and helps with energy production, even within the heart. Spring Valley CoQ10 is one that Zach recommends to his patients all the time.

Dr Oz said CoQ10 can actually help lower your blood pressure because it opens the blood vessels so more blood can go through at a lower pressure. Dr Oz said you should take the supplement because in order to get the recommended amounts of CoQ10 from food you’d have to eat eight pounds of beef, 10 pounds of peanuts, or 300 oranges, which would obviously be pretty difficult and unhealthy to do.

Zach suggested taking 100 mg once or twice a day. If you’re going to take it, take it with a meal that has a little bit of fat in it so that it can be absorbed more readily.

Dr Oz: Fish Oil & Vitamin D For Heart Health

Next, Dr Oz and Zach suggested taking fish oil, which is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which help maintain healthy triglyceride levels. Zach suggested taking up to 1,000 mg of omega-3s a day.

Finally, Dr Oz suggested a vitamin D supplement, and Zach said studies have shown that low levels of vitamin D may impact the health of your heart. He recommends that vitamin D is a part of your supplement plan. Dr Oz said a lot of people are deficient in vitamin D because you have to get it from the sun, which is hard to do in the winter months.

Zach suggested 1,000 IU of vitamin D, and you can find vitamin D as well as all of the other supplements at Walmart.
