Dr Oz: Stomach Parasites
Have you been feeling tired and run down lately? (Who hasn’t?) Did you know that if these feelings persist, they could be caused by something crazy, like stomach parasites? It’s true, and ultimately you’d need to see a doctor. But before you pick up the phone, Dr Oz invited a gastroenterologist, Dr Robynne Chutkan, to talk about what could be going on in your GI tract, and whether you should be alarmed by your symptoms.
Dr Chutkan said that the biggest reason people report feeling chronic fatigue is that they are suffering with parasites that are attacking their bodies from the inside out. (Between this and zombie attacks, it seems like we have more to worry about than ever!)
Dr Oz: Chronic Fatigue & Parasites
Parasites feed on the nutrients we need for our bodies to function. They can cause problems with the bowels as well as Chronic Fatigue symptoms. An estimated 40 million people infected with parasites don’t know this is the reason they’re run down. Even worse, these parasites can live inside you for years.
According to Dr Chutkan, 46% of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients are also infected with parasites. Contaminated drinking water, unwashed fruit, and unclean hands are the most common means of transmission for parasites into the body.
Dr Oz: Visible Vs Microscopic Parasites
Visible Parasites, like the name suggests, can be seen with the naked eye. They often come from food you eat, and they can sit in your gut and grow inside the body up to 50 feet long. (That’s crazy and very upsetting, right?) They are stealing your nutrients, and they can live as long as 25 years–your parasites could be old enough to drink! They burrow into the intestines in some cases, leading to symptoms of fatigue and anemia.
On the other hand, Microscopic Parasites often come from dirty drinking water. They are surprisingly common in daycare centers. Kids could be bringing them home unknowingly. As many as 30% of sufferers could have these Parasites without realizing it.
