Dr Oz: Sofia Vergara Sluggish Health Struggles

Sofia Vergara told Dr. Oz she always thought more was better. Being raised in a Latin culture she was taught to believe the more you had the better, but she soon found out that was not the case in America when casting directors told her to lose weight and get a breast reduction. While Vergara told Dr. Oz she did not want to lose her appearance altogether, she did make some healthy changes to her lifestyle which eventually led to weight loss and an improvement to her health.

Dr Oz: Sofia Vergara Freezes Eggs

Sofia Vergara told Dr. Oz she struggled as a 20-year-old mother who was trying to make her life better for herself and for her child. Even through the struggles, Vergara has made quite the life for herself. She said her son has grown into a great man and she is now engaged to be married. She also revealed that she has frozen some of her eggs so she has the option of having another child even though she is in her 40s.

Dr Oz: Sofia Vergara Hypothyroid After Thyroid Cancer Removed

At the young age of 28, Sofia Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer which led to the removal of her thyroid altogether. Dr. Oz explained that when she had her thyroid removed, she became hypothyroid, meaning she is missing a key hormone that regulates metabolism.

For the past 10 years, Vergara told Dr. Oz she has been diligently taking medication and making her health a top priority in her life. She urged everyone in the audience to be tested for a “sluggish” thyroid because it is simple to have done and it could save your life.

Dr Oz: Risk Of Hypothyroidism Rises When In the Family

Dr. Jordan Geller, Sofia Vergara’s personal physician, stopped by the show to explain how the thyroid works. He said the thyroid is a small gland located in the neck and it is responsible for a number of functions in our body. There are many symptoms of hypothyroidism (listed below) and Dr. Geller urged everyone to stay on the lookout for those symptoms. If you have a family member who has been diagnosed with low thyroid it is important you get tested because a genetic connection puts you at risk for having low thyroid as well.

Dr Oz: Dr Jordan Geller Thyroid Self-Test

Dr. Jordan Geller demonstrated a self-test everyone can do at home to see if your thyroid is healthy. Simply place two fingers on your collarbone at the base of your throat and swallow. If you feel something move up and down, you might have a problem and you need to be tested right away.

Dr Oz: Hypothyroidism Symptoms

Dr. Jordan Geller outlined the symptoms of hypothyroidism which are listed below:

  • Fatigue
  • Unexpected weight gain
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Brittle nails, dry skin and dry hair
  • Constipation

Dr. Oz suggested seeing a doctor if you have three or more of the symptoms, but if you are worried at all, get a test from the doctor to be sure.

    I too have been diagnosed with hypothyroid and my doctor checked for goyders on the thyroid and there was none. Can you still have thyroid cancer without them? I suffer from all 5 on your list of symptoms.
