Dr Oz: Rory Dies After Sepsis Is Misdiagnosed
Dr. Oz sat down with parents Orliath and Ciaran Stuanton to talk about the death of their son after he fell at school and cut his leg. The cut quickly turned to sepsis although doctors misdiagnosed Rory with a severe case of the flu. It was later found out the hospital had blood work suggesting the young boy had sepsis but opted to discharge the boy rather than treat his symptoms.
Dr Oz: Sepsis Symptoms
Dr. Oz said this episode meant a lot to him because he does not want any other family to go through what the Staunton’s went through. Dr. Oz explained that sepsis is often misdiagnosed but he had some telltale signs that sepsis had set in.
Below are the symptoms of sepsis:
- Fever or chills.
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
- Excruciating pain that is bigger than it should be for the area that is hurting.
Dr. Oz said if you see any combination of these symptoms, especially if the pain is worse than should it be for the injury, it is important to get to the hospital and ask for answers about what is wrong. He said an infection like sepsis can spread at a rapid rate and in some cases, like Rory’s, it can end in death.
Dr Oz: Sepsis Can Occur From Any Type Of Infection
Dr. Oz said the most important thing to understand about sepsis is that any infection can turn into sepsis. To protect yourself from sepsis, there are some important steps you want to take. First, when you get a cut, the wound is immediately susceptible to bacteria and chemicals around you. These bacteria and chemicals can cause a blockage that prevents blood flowing to the heart, the reason dark spots begin to appear. This is a sign that sepsis has set in and could be turning from a minor cut into a serious infection.
Dr Oz: Sepsis Causes Blood Vessels To Leak
Dr. Oz says when bacteria get into the blood vessels, they can also do more than just block the blood flow. The bacteria can also cause leaking. When the blood vessels start to leak they are unable to get blood to the vital organs in the body leading to the organs shriveling up, septic shock taking place and ultimately, death.
Dr Oz: Shiny, Bulging Wound Number One Sign Of Sepsis
Dr. Leigh Vinocur said sepsis is far more common than most people realize. It is actually one of the top 10 causes of death in the United States and the leading cause of death in children around the world. While dark black spots are a sign of sepsis, it is often a sign that comes to late do anything about it. Dr. Vincour said there is one more very important sign that comes before the black spots and could save a person’s life if spotted soon enough.
A wound with a shiny and bulging appearance – Dr. Oz said it is important to look closely at the wound and to use the word sepsis when talking with a doctor. Do not stop questioning the doctor about the cut until everyone is certain sepsis has not set in.
