Dr Oz Old Wives Tales: Health Myths Debunked
Dr Oz revealed the truth behind some Old Wives Tales on his show. Can you separate myth from reality? He already told us whether Chicken Soup Cures Colds. Next, he explored Green Mucus, Cracking Knuckles & Arthritis. He also answered a question for the ages: Is a dog’s mouth cleaner than a human’s?
What Does Green Mucus Mean? Is It An Infection?
Green Mucus is a sign of infection, or so we’ve been told. Is this true or a myth?
Dr Oz said this is true, and he invited Keisha to learn why. He used two cylinders to represent the body’s nasal passages. Two smaller beakers represented Invaders, and Dr Oz poured those into the cylinders and let them overflow.
But only one of them became green. That’s because Iron Cells in the mucus start to oxidize, which is what happens when fluid stays in your nose too long. This is an indication that you’ve been sick for a long period, and often indicates something more serious than a cold, such as Bronchitis or the Flu.
Dr Oz Health Myths: Is A Dog’s Mouth Cleaner Than A Human’s?
Maybe you have heard the idea that a dog’s saliva has healing properties. But does that mean a dog’s mouth is cleaner than your mouth? Is a dog’s mouth sanitary? Is a dog’s mouth cleaner than a human’s?
This is false. Janine from the audience brought her dog Simon, admitting that she has her family kiss the dog on the mouth when they are sick. (Is that worse for the dog or the human in that case?)
Dr Oz compared swabs of Janine’s mouth with Simon the dog’s mouth. Simon’s results came back with far more germs. That’s because dogs generally have many more germs than humans, but they’re typically not harmful to humans.
On the other hand, this means dog bites aren’t as dangerous as human bites, which I’m sure isn’t much comfort to the Bath Salt Zombie victims of 2012. For more information read about Dog Oral Hygiene & Human Mouth Bacteria.
Does Cracking Your Knuckles Cause Arthritis?
How many of you have heard the rumor that cracking your knuckles is a cause of Arthritis? Me too.
But it’s a myth! Dr Oz shattered a lot of long-held illusions today. Sherry from the audience said she likes to crack her knuckles twice a day. She even did it on the show to demonstrate.
Dr Oz explained that cracking your fingers creates air pockets that build up over time. But the good news is that the fingers aren’t harmed when this buildup is released, so you can crack away without worrying about getting bigger knuckles or developing Arthritis from this.
