Dr. Oz Livia’s Bowl Recipe Constipation Remedy

Dr. Oz said that 42 million people have constipation in the U.S.  It is the silent struggle that people are too embarrassed to talk about.  Nobody wants to admit they are constipated, but the feeling of being stuck, blocked up and needing relief is just awful.  So, Doctor Oz put together the Constipation Reboot Remedy to clear up your constipation.  My favorite part was the best fiber bowl competition that he did.  You absolutely must checkout Livia’s Bowl Recipe below, because it tastes amazing!!!



How Do You Know If You Are Constipated?

First of all, how do you know if you are constipated?  Dr. Oz said that if you answer yes to any of the following questions, then you are constipated:

  1. Do you have fewer than three stools per week?
  2. Do you have hard poop?
  3. Are you pushing more than your are pooping?

Dr. Oz was joined by a volunteer who had been constipated for five years.  She lives in fear, because she doesn’t know if eating more will make her constipation problem better or worse.  The uncertainty over what to do is crippling.  She said she is very frustrated, her stomach is often in knots, along with bloating, cramping and having the urge to go, but nothing comes out.  Does any of this sound familiar?

Dr. Oz: How Much Fiber Do You Need Each Day?

Dr. Oz was joined by Gastroenterologist Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa, who said that fiber is the number one thing that really gets your poop moving.  You need to eat 25-30 grams of fiber per day.  Some of the best sources of fiber to include in your diet are apples with the skin on them, oats, brown rice and raspberries.


Dr. Oz: Livia’s Bowl Recipe for Constipation

Dr. Oz did a contest for the best bowl recipe to get things moving, and Livia’s Bowl Recipe won!  To make her constipation fighting bowl, you mix together oats, flax and chia seed blend, unsweetened almond milk, cinnamon, coconut oil, pumpkin seeds, blueberries, strawberries, chia seeds, almonds and walnuts.  You can tweak the amounts to your taste!  Dr. Oz said that berries are always rich in fiber, so you can swap around the types of berries as well.

Dr. Oz: How Important is Hydration for Constipation?

Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa told Dr. Oz that dehydration is the most common cause of constipation, especially if you increased your amount of fiber intake, because your colon gets jammed up.  Water makes your stool softer so that it can pass through.  Try to drink 8 cups of water per day, and if you exercise or are outside a lot and sweating, you need even more.

Dr. Oz Miralax vs Stimulant Laxatives – What’s Better?

Dr. Oz said that after you have tried diet changes and are exercising regularly, if you are still constipated then it may be time to try an over-the-counter laxative.  But laxatives aren’t all created equally – there are different types.  A Stimulant Laxative makes your colon squeeze harder, but it doesn’t make the poop softer.  The problem is, the  longer your poop is in your intestines for, the more water that gets sucked out and the harder the poop becomes.  Miralax, on the other hand, is a more gentle laxative that tends to works better, because it allows the colon to pull water back into the stool, so the poop is softer.  That means you won’t have to push as hard to get the stool out.  Just make sure that you follow the Miralax directions carefully.  And, of course, if you ever have a sudden change in your bowel pattern, that is a sign that you should talk to your doctor to rule out a more serious underlying condition.
