Dr Oz: Big Box Stores: Costco vs Target vs Sams Club vs Walmart

Dr. Oz: What to Buy at the Big Box Store

Dr. Oz asked his audience who shops at Big Box Stores like Costco, Sams Club, Target or Walmart.  Nearly everyone raised their hand!  One lady said that if you can name it, she buys it at a Big Box Store, including detergent, cleaning supplies, shampoo, conditioner and household items.  She lives alone, but likes the good deals that you get when buying in bulk.  So what is actually a good deal to buy?  Dr. Oz investigated and even did an ice cream taste test of Costco’s Kirkland Ice Cream versus a big name brand.  You may be shocked!

Dr. Oz: Big Box Store Signature Brands

Dr. Oz said that stores are increasing their quantity of organic and wellness products, even among the store’s signature brands.  At Sam’s Club, their store brand is called Member’s Mark.  At Target it is called Simply Balance.  And at Walmart it is called Great Value.  Target’s Simply Balanced line has over 500 products with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, and the prices are 10-20% less than most national wellness brands.

Dr. Oz Big Box Store Activewear

Lets face it, we love to live in our leggings and activewear!  You can get great deals at the Big Box Stores by buying their signature lines including Kirkland at Costco, Impact by Jillian Michaels at Walmart and C9 by Champion at Target.  Hitha Herzog, a guest on the Dr. Oz Show, even found a sports bra at Target for $12!

Dr Oz: Target’s Natural Beauty Products

Hitha Herzog even told Dr. Oz that you can score deals on natural beauty products that are non-toxic and paraben-free (including skincare, makeup, shampoo and conditioner)!  Another great tip is to download Target’s Cartwheel App where you can find great deals, like 20% off Burt’s Bees products.

Dr Oz: Unit Price

Hitha Herzog, a financial expert and retail investigative journalist, said that you should always check the per-unit price.  For example, at a regular store, you may get a 12 oz bottle of shampoo for $7.99 (which is 67 cents per ounce) and at a Big Box Store you may get a 38 oz bottle of shampoo for $9.99 (26 cents per ounce).  Even though $9.99 is more than $7.99, you are paying less per ounce, so the big box store has a bargain buy!

Lets look at one more example – laundry detergent.  At a regular grocery store, you can get a 100 oz bottle of detergent for $11.99 (24 cents per wash), but at a big box store you get 225 oz for $19.99 (18 cents per wash).  The big box store wins again!

Dr. Oz said that you should also take into consideration the shelf-life of the product, because you don’t want it to go bad before you can use it all.  Condiments and medication for example, you may not need to buy it in bulk, and you may end up throwing it out before it is all used up.  Another idea is to split the bulk items with a friend.  If you live in NYC for example, you may have limited space in a small apartment.  But you can still buy the large bulk pack of toilet paper and split it with a friend!

Dr. Oz: Gift Cards at Big Box Stores

Don’t forget the gift card aisle at stores like Costco, Sam’s Club, Target and Walmart!  You can often find gift cards for 30% off to places like movie theaters or restaurants.  And the gift cards they offer change every week or every month, so check back often!
