Dr Oz: How To Stop Acid Reflux
Dr Oz enlisted TLC’s T-Boz and Chilli as his Assistants of the Day to talk about Acid Reflux, a problem that affects millions. Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas is one of them.
Dr Oz: TLC’s Chilli + Acid Reflux
Chilli said that her symptoms can be insufferable. She has to avoid acidic foods, and her symptoms were worse during pregnancy. T-Boz said her daughter has Silent Acid Reflux, which caused her to stop breathing in infancy.
Doctor Oz put the women to work in a demonstration to explain Acid Reflux causes and prevention. Healthy digestion is regulated by a sphincter that keeps acid in the stomach, so it does not back up into the esophagus.
Sometimes, that sphincter can malfunction, allowing stomach acids to travel all the way up to the back of the throat. It can burn the vocal cords, and that’s exactly what happened to Chilli, who had to change her diet and rest her voice when she learned she couldn’t sing because of her acid reflux.
It can also lead to cancer, and most of us do not want to be on prescriptions for the rest of our lives if there are other options.
Dr Oz: Acid Reflux Foods to Avoid
Here are some foods you should probably avoid if you have Acid Reflux symptoms.
- Acidic Foods (including Citrus Juices)
- Caffeinated Foods
- Spicy Foods
- Fatty Foods
Dr Oz said that people can surprise people. They keep you full longer, which means they are sitting in the stomach and have more time to be regurgitated.
Dr Oz: Elevate Your Bed for Acid Reflux Prevention
You can get relief by trying to elevate your head at night while you sleep. Putting pillows under your head does not work, according to studies, because most of us end up rolling off the pillows during the night.
Instead, find a way to elevate the entire head of your bed about five inches. That’s enough of an angle to prevent acid reflux and keep stomach acid where it belongs.
There is also a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can slightly lift the stomach in an attempt to prevent symptoms.
Dr Oz: Acid Reflux Oatmeal Remedy
Oatmeal soothes the stomach, which helps alleviate the pain of reflux symptoms. You can try it as a snack in the afternoon, if you haven’t before.
Dr Oz: Apple Cider Vinegar for Acid Reflux
Mix equal parts of water and Apple Cider Vinegar and drink this. It has been shown to work, but doctors aren’t quite sure how or why it does the trick. Try this remedy about once a day. If it’s too severe, try adding a little honey to cut the heat.
