What do you do when your career path is not working out the way you had planned? For R.A. Dickey, a minor league pitcher, that was the question he faced at a pivotal moment. Mastering the knuckleball was a choice that has changed the course of his life and career.

The pitcher eventually caught fire and rose to become the only knuckleball pitcher in the MLB. In 2012, he racked up an impressive 11-game winning streak, notching 20 total wins for the year. After a remarkable season for the New York Mets in 2012, he is pitching for a new team this season.

Dickey was traded from the Mets to the Toronto Blue Jays, and he spoke with 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl, who visited the pitcher at the team’s Florida training camp before baseball season began.

60 Minutes: R.A. Dickey Cy Young Award

Maybe even more incredible is the fact that Dickey’s skilled career turnaround made him just one of three Mets pitchers in baseball history to win the prestigious Cy Young Award. The Dickey profile even introduces 60 Minutes viewers to R.A. Dickey’s wife, Anne, revisits his childhood home in Nashville, and reexamines a painful chapter of the pitcher’s past that he uncovered in therapy sessions.
